A gem seldom seen in jewelry stores and virtually unknown to the general public, apatite is beloved by collectors. The astonishingly bright blue varieties display amazing intensity of color.
Apatite is a common phosphate mineral that is found in abundance all over the earth but select "gemmy" crystals are rare. Its name comes from the Greek "apatao" meaning "I am misleading," referring apparently, to the ease with which it can be misidentified. It comes in yellow, green, blue, violet and colorless. The green to blue colors are the most in demand. Apatites are notoriously difficult to polish and well polished gems have premium value. It is also a soft gem that should be worn gently. Earrings, pendants, pins and tie tacks are good choices but ring use is discouraged.
