A family of fine grained (microcrystalline) quartz that comes in a wide variety of colors and even patterns. These include: agates, jaspers, carnelian (also known as cornelian), chrysocolla, gem silica, moss agate, chrysoprase, onyx and sardonxy, as well as a variety known specifically as chalcedony.
The name of this gem is derived either from the city name Chalcedon, where chalcedony is reputed to have been discovered; or from the Latin "chalcedonius", which in turn is from the Greek "khalkedon" which means "a mystical gem." Chalcedony's durability, beauty, and abundance made it one of the earliest raw materials used by humans, and it may be the oldest mineral used as a gemstone. The wide range of color, and sometimes patterns, offer something for every taste.
