A distinctive orange type of Garnet known for it's rich, velvety hues that range in color from reddish to pinkish to yellowish. The most available color is a dark brownish red color with orange overtones.
Malayan Garnets are named after the Swahili word "malaia" which means "outcast" or "worthless." This is because they were originally found (and tossed aside) while workers were searching for sapphires. The name has stuck but today these gems are highly valued for their rich colors. The rarest malayans are of honey peach, cinnamon, tangerine or pinkish hues with no brown overtones at all. The deeper shades of reddish/orange are also outstanding. As typical of all garnets, these are good gems for any kind of setting.
