This variety of garnet is rare and ranges in color from a yellowish-orange to an intense fiery orange to an orange brown or brownish red.
This garnet is named after the Spessart district in Bavaria, Germany. It boasts the fourth highest refractive index among all gemstones and a well polished gem is exceptionally brilliant. The finest spessartites are crisp and brilliant with a highly saturated, primary orange color, and even those with visible inclusions are highly desirable. The darker brownish red colors are more affordable but also highly valued. Spessartites above 10 carats are extremely rare.
