Crystal opal is transparent to translucent when held to the light, whether or not there's a play of color within the gem.
Sometimes referred to as jelly or water opal, crystal opal is very nearly transparent, with a floating "opalescent" quality very difficult to describe. The state of Oregon in the USA, is the most reliable source for crystal opal today, and the divine "blue hyalite" opal from Oregon is among the finest. Held up next to one's skin "blue hyalite" opal will glow with an ephemeral blue. This delightful opal also appears to pick up and reflect whatever color one wears, making it the most neutral colored gemstone on the market today. Perfect for day or night, crystal opal looks magnificent with any wardrobe color. As with any opal, crystal opal should be worn gently.
