Transparent to translucent, orangish-yellow to dark red opal with or without a play of color.
Sometimes referred to as "cherry opal," fire opal is named for it's fiery yellow-orange-red colors and not for the flashes from within. The gem may or may not have flashes of color but is usually sold for its color and clarity. The more transparent and highly saturated the color, the more valuable the gem. The flaming "fireball" orange or cherry-red fire opals are in highest demand. It's a relatively scarce gem since it's found only in Mexico or Brazil in sizes large enough to carve.
