Scapolite is not very well known as a gemstone but is destined to become better known due to it's attractive color and reasonable price. Gem quality crystals are usually a yellow or violet, but may also be pink.
The name Scapolite is derived from the Greek words "scapos" which means "rod" and "lithos" which means "stone," and refers to it's stick-like crystal habit. Originally discovered in Myanmar in 1913, scapolite is currently available from Brazil, Madagascar, Tanzania and Sri Lanka, bringing this versatile gem wider recognition. Scapolite has a bright and lively look when carved but is only moderately hard and should be worn gently.
