Particularly beautiful among tourmalines, rubellite occurs in a stunning red with overtones ranging from intense pink to violet.
The name comes from the Latin "rubellus" which means "reddish." Rubellites are not merely red or shocking pink tourmalines however - they have the distinction of being the red gems in the tourmaline family who do NOT change color or tone depending on the light source. A true rubellite shines just as intensely in artificial light as it does in sunlight. Other pink or red tourmalines, by contrast, show a tinge of brown in artificial light. Most rubellites come from Brazil, Madagascar, Nigeria or Pakistan and tend to be slightly more included than other varieties of tourmaline. The color of rubellite is truly enchanting, and attracts attention from across a room.
